Sal, how wonderful it was that you got to experience the magic of the writers festival. You’ve captured it all beautifully here with your words. I feel the same about my magazine collection, not that it’s highly stacked, but I just feel such a connection to them as they made up such a large part of my culinary journey in the early days.

I am finally starting to catch up on being at least a month (!) behind in my Substack reading, but after reading this I just want to say don’t cull the collection! I understand why people need to cull their collections a bit sometimes, but why must we always be thinking our collections are too big or not worthy of taking up space? If it brings us joy and there is no practical reason to cull, I don’t see why we would do it? If the collection brings joy and is still useful then that’s all the reason I personally need to keep all my books. It’s not like a collection of DVDs or similar where one doesn’t have a DVD player anymore so the collection is redundant (an actual scenario played out in my family… the DVDs still remain🙄). On another note, I hope to attend that festival one day, it sounds so good!
