Sal, how wonderful it was that you got to experience the magic of the writers festival. You’ve captured it all beautifully here with your words. I feel the same about my magazine collection, not that it’s highly stacked, but I just feel such a connection to them as they made up such a large part of my culinary journey in the early days.
I am finally starting to catch up on being at least a month (!) behind in my Substack reading, but after reading this I just want to say don’t cull the collection! I understand why people need to cull their collections a bit sometimes, but why must we always be thinking our collections are too big or not worthy of taking up space? If it brings us joy and there is no practical reason to cull, I don’t see why we would do it? If the collection brings joy and is still useful then that’s all the reason I personally need to keep all my books. It’s not like a collection of DVDs or similar where one doesn’t have a DVD player anymore so the collection is redundant (an actual scenario played out in my family… the DVDs still remain🙄). On another note, I hope to attend that festival one day, it sounds so good!
Bravo 👏🏻 what wise words. Stay it shall. I actually think collections are wonderful archives of our personal stories for our descendants. My grandmothers collections are wonderful and treasured. Hopefully my books will be one day too x
Sally, I keep saying I have no interest in recipes and cooking and that food is just for growth and energy and yet, there's never a time I don't take away a recipe from your writings and try it (generally loving it) and then filing it in my Posterity folder. This salad is one such. Thank you. PS: Haven't seen Sorrento since we left Melbs in 1991 to return to Tassie. It may be time...
The Sorrento writers festival had such a great line up of authors this year, I was disappointed that I was unable to go (working-the joys of small business). I keep hoping that a food writers festival will pop up in Victoria or the one in Sydney makes a podcast of the event.
I too have a large collection of books & magazine (I can recall which mag has the recipe I need for a fav recipe but that skill is diminishing). As well as scrapbooks full of recipes cut from newspapers over the years. I have no intention of culling! I love picking them up and flipping through stumbling over a forgotten recipe or idea.

They really do don’t they?! It’s hard to pin down but they really a bit different to the treasured books.

Oh Prue this is the greatest compliment any recipe developer could ever ask for, thank you so much.
And as for Sorrento you absolutely have to try and come to next years writers festival, it’s an absolutely wonderfully curated event x

I couldn’t agree more, about picking them up and reminiscing. It’s super interesting to see how food trends have changed.
